If so, come to the MCC on Friday to see each group in action. elecTONIC will start the night off with some student DJs, CalSLAM poets will grace the mic with their poetry, and students for hip-hop will end the night by bringing out a few local hip-hop artists - Maddy of Canary Sing, Dyna*Mic, and Second Nature.

Find your niche at Cal - see if you want to be a part of any of these dope arts organizations!

CalSLAM Open Mic and Slam featuring Joshua Merchant

CalSLAM: UC BERKELEY OPEN MIC/POETRY SLAM – Every 3rd THURSDAY

Shake off those summer cobwebs, bring those new pieces, and start off the semester right with CalSLAM’s first open mic and slam of the year, featuring Oakland poet Joshua Merchant!

—-
JOSHUA MERCHANT is the 2011 Youth Speaks San Francisco Grand Slam Champion and member of the 2011 Brave New Voices Bay Area Team. He is now preparing to compete at the Individual World Poetry Slam in Ohio this October.
—-

This is the first of a series of monthly poetry slams this semester where students will compete to earn their place on the Cal Slam poetry team, which will represent UC Berkeley at the 2012 College Unions Poetry Slam Invitation (CUPSI) and compete against 35+ Universities across the nation. *You do NOT have to be a Cal student to perform in the open mic or compete in the slam.

If you do not know the rules of a poetry slam: Participants have 3 minutes to share their words. They are then scored on a scale of 1-10 by five randomly selected judges. Particpants are given a ten second grace period, after which .5 points will be deducted with every subsequent 10 seconds over time. Also, the slam will consist of two rounds - so prepare at least two poems if you plan to compete.

OF COURSE, the point is not in the “points,” the point is the poetry but if you’re uncomfortable being judged on a rigorous 1-10 scale, the night starts off with an OPEN MIC that we HIGHLY encourage folks to share their stuff (*hint* new poets *hint*)

If you are interested in performing, watching, being enlightened or even getting more involved with the organization, please come! Everyone is welcome and we hope to see you there.

145 Dwinelle Hall. UC Berkeley Campus
$5 General Admissions. Competitors in for FREE
Sign-Ups 6:30PM, Show 7:00PM
