Next Up: CalSLAM Celebrates Homecoming!

GOAL: Create a space where different communities and community members can come together and share a little piece of their homes with each other

HOW: BY ANY ARTISTIC MEANS NECESSARY

CalSLAM is putting together a “Homeland” themed event in the Multicultural Center for Homecoming on Friday October 14th at 7pm. Because it’s a homecoming event, we want to bring our homes here and celebrate the homes we create for ourselves at Berkeley.

This is a chance to rep your community- as both an audience member and a potential performer. Yes that’s right; this a show, not a slam, so we want artistic diversity – dancers, singers, musicians, comedians, painters, sculptors, paper folders, talkers, listeners, performers of all sorts, and any other artists that can celebrate their homeland. Share your stories and your talent with us!

If you’re interested in performing or want more information, please email calslamdirectors@gmail.com  by Saturday October 8th (New Deadline!) so we have enough time to put together an amazing night and get your community on stage!

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE:

Word is getting around fast and some amazing performances are already lined up (including some student singers, poets, LIVE ART by Mechxa and a performance by Theatre Rice), but there is always room for more so we extended the deadline to submit your performance idea to SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8TH. Please pass this on to all of your community’s artists and performers!

Last Chance (For Love) Slam and Open Mic

February 9th, 6:30-10 in UC Berkeley’s Multicultural Center

Love CalSLAM? Love poetry? Love bearing your heart and soul to a rich and supportive community? CalSLAM’s Last Chance (For Love) Slam and Open Mic is your second-to-last opportunity to get your fix before the semester’s over!

This is the sixth of a series of slams leading up to our final slam in February, where students will compete to earn their place on the Cal Slam poetry team, which will represent UC Berkeley at the 2012 College Unions Poetry Slam Invitation (CUPSI) and compete against 35+ Universities across the nation. *You do NOT have to be a Cal student to perform in the open mic or compete in the slam, however you must be affiliated with UC Berkeley to qualify to compete at CUPSI.

If you do not know the rules of a poetry slam: Participants have 3 minutes to share their words. They are then scored on a scale of 1-10 by five randomly selected judges. Participants are given a ten second grace period, after which .5 points will be deducted with every subsequent 10 seconds over time. Also, the slam will consist of two rounds - so prepare at least two poems if you plan to compete.

OF COURSE, the point is not in the “points,” the point is the poetry but if you’re uncomfortable being judged on a rigorous 1-10 scale, the night starts off with an OPEN MIC that we HIGHLY encourage folks to share their stuff (*hint* new poets *hint*)

If you are interested in performing, watching, being enlightened or even getting more involved with the organization, please come! Everyone is welcome and we hope to see you there.

Multicultural Center, Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union Building, UC Berkeley Campus
Free admission, but $5-10 donations highly encouraged.
Sign-Ups 6:30PM, Show 7:00PM
